Okay, so I’m seeing from my blog stats that quite a few people are looking for information on English Pointers. I’ve done a number of posts on the Pointer diet and exercise. Go here, here and here. Zeph has just turned one year old. On October 7. I can’t believe it really. No longer can I say he’s a puppy; now he’s a young dog. Zsa Zsa will be 8 months old on October 14 and she’s quite the young lady now.

For today’s post, I thought I’d tell you about the dog casserole I regularly prepare for Zeph and Zsa Zsa. I don’t feed them any processed pet food crap. No tinned dog food. Any of the meat they have is from a farmer who grazes his cows on our property (i.e. it’s one of his cows they’re eating). They have organic goat’s milk and I make them dog biscuits (note to self: post the recipe). They get Brewer’s Yeast and wheatgerm sprinkled through their food, along with a couple of drops of Brookby Herbs’ Organic Dog herbal supplement. I use Brookby Herbs stuff a lot actually. It’s an NZ animal health company and they also have equine herbs.

About twice a week, I brew up a casserole and this forms the basis of their dinner. In the photo below, they are woofing into the casserole I made them the day after I returned to New Zealand and here’s what’s in it:

* organic brown rice and organic wholewheat pasta

* organic raw mince meat

* carrots, beans, broccoli, pumpkin and potatoes (from our own vege patch!)

* tomato sauce for flavour (from health food store)

All of this was chucked in a pot with water to cover and cooked for 15-20 minutes. Then I added:

* Orijen organic kibble (soaked in water first to soften it)

* wheatgerm sprinkled through the meal, along with a few drops of Organic Dog oil. I alternate Brewer’s Yeast, wheatgerm and raw oats.

You can basically throw anything into this dog casserole. Just be aware that English Pointers can be fussy eaters, so you need to vary the casserole. So sometimes they have chicken or venison or rabbit casserole. English Pointers are also rather fond of sweet potato – cut into chewable slices and bake in the oven for about 15 minutes. They also like apple slices.
